I got the latest XPS 17 aka L702x last month to replace an HP Pavilion dv6. The specifications are,
CPU: i7-2630QM
DRAM: 6GB DDR3-1333
Screen: 17.3in FHD 3D
GPU: GeForce GT555M 1GB
Hard Drive: 640GB
Optical Drive: Blu-ray burner
Battery: 9-cell
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium.
My first impression is that the XPS is huge compared to the HP, even though the screen is just 1 inch bigger. The weight is also substantially greater. The 9-cell battery protrudes from the bottom, making it even harder to fit into tight space. Although the 9-cell is supposed to extend the battery life, I get just under 3 hours in mixed usage. So, the XPS is a desk-top replacement through and through. If mobility is an important consideration, the XPS 15 can be had with the same CPU and screen resolution, and will be a much better choice.
In terms of computing power, the XPS does not disappoint. The i7-2630QM is capable of 8 threads simultaneously, and I have not experienced any slow-down so far due to CPU overload. The GT555M can run all the latest 3D games if the graphics is set to low quality, but it gets really hot and loud, not to mention the quick battery drain. For gaming, a good desk-top remains the best option. The XPS comes with a pair of 3D glass, but I have not had the urge to try it out either for movie, because of the lack of interesting media, or for games, due to the heat and noise the GPU generates. I intend to use the computer for numerical work, and the CPU, the memory system and the hard drives are the key components.
6GB of memory and a 5400-rpm drive do not match well with the high-performing 2630QM, and I had planned to upgrade them right after the purchase. Once the machine arrives and gets its belly opened up, however, I am shocked to find just 2 SODIMM slots. Dell is advertising "up to 16GB RAM" in 4GBx4 configuration, and this is clearly not the case. After some exhaustive research, I finally find the explanation in an obscure Dell customer forum. It turns out that, to save literally a few pennies, Dell has used two different motherboards in the same model: one with 4 SODIMM slots and 3GB of GDDR RAM, the other with 2 SODIMM slots and 1GB of GDDR RAM. I had noticed and got puzzled by the $170 price difference when one stepped up from the GT555M 1GB to the GT555M 3GB. This kind of explains Dell's thought process in the pricing hierarchy. Still, I am upset that Dell fails to explain any of this on its website because there are customers like myself who do not care about the graphic RAM but do want to have the potential to upgrade to 16GB of system memory. I had paid $300 extra compared to HP dv7 for Dell exactly because XPS was supposed to be a premium brand without too much corner-cutting, but I under-estimated Dell's capacity for taking advantage of their customers. In the end, I can only replace the 2GB SODIMM with a 4GB module. The swap costs me $30 after the old SODIMM is sold on ebay, still much less than what Dell would have charged me to upgrade to 8GB memory in the factory.
Upgrading the hard drives, on the other hand, is something that the designers of XPS obviously take into account. The XPS comes with 2 drive bays, with the 640GB drive occupying the first one only. I have a new Crucial RealSSD C300 - Solid state drive - 64 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-600 ready and just have to move the 640GB drive to the second slot before replacing the SSD in the primary drive bay. Unfortunately, these drive bays are covered with aluminum shields that are attached to the motherboard with tiny screws. I strip one of the screw heads by using a driver a little too large. This necessitates some drilling followed by the application of a screw extractor. The whole process is extremely scary because of the danger of breaking the motherboard, and should be avoided if at all possible. In the end, I have to say that installing the SSD is quite straightforward if I had not had the accident with the screw. Once the hardware is in place, I reinstall the OS with the DVD which had cost me $19 extra, and wipe the 640GB drive to use for data. All the drivers are either included in a free DVD or can be downloaded from Dell's support site easily. The applications such as PowerDVD, however, are nowhere to be found. I have to call Dell support line and have the DVDs shipped to me, but they are at least free of charge. All together, the pre-installed softwares including the OS take up 30GB, leaving 29GB of usable space ("64GB" drives really have only 59GB of usable space in another case of misleading vendor advertisement.) on the SSD for other applications.
Once the upgrades are done, I am very happy with the performance of the machine. The SSD really makes a big difference. Windows 7 boots up at under 15 seconds and shuts down in 10. For this alone, I am willing to endure the bulk of the XPS 17 for the dual drive bays. Overall, however, I am somewhat less happy with Dell than HP for three reasons:
1. The HP dv6 just seemed more tightly put together;
2. I did not experienced misleading feature descriptions with HP;
3. I miss the fingerprint scanner on the HP notebook.
========================== Added 9/2/2011 ==========================
I replaced the boot drive on another PC with an SSD recently. This was an older computer and the drive had been cluttered with various files and programs. Reinstalling everything seemed impractical, so I went looking in download.com for a drive-cloning software. I tried Acronis first, but it was extremely buggy and the trial version did not allow downsized cloning. Eventually, I found EaseUs Todo Backup Free 3.0. It worked very well and, as the name suggested, was totally free. If I have to do it again, EaseUs is the way to go.
========================== Added 3/20/2012 ==========================
Although Intel does not officially support 8GB SODIMM modules with the HM67 chipset used in this Dell, intrepid users have tried them and generally found the new denser format to work just fine. As the price for these new SODIMM comes down, I give it a try as well and it works! Now this XPS sports 16GB of DRAM even though Dell has seen fit to equip it with only two SODIMM slots.

When I clicked on the link to the XPS 17 to check it out I was skeptic because it didn't seem to be much from what i could see from the specs listed on the site. When I did click on the link I was wasn't let down by the specs listed because I knew this was a laptop that that had the potential to be beefed up. If it wasn't for the good things I've herd about the XPS 17 I would have never clicked the link, and after I did I saw the specs listed in the title weren't even as good as I hoped, but when I checked the other new XPS 17's by other users, which was Hayley's because she was the only person that had some listed for sale, The specs blew me away and came with a Dell one year warranty, I was shocked. The equivalent XPS on the Dell site was selling for more but the specs listed for the XPS Hayley is selling here on Ebay, but the specs reflected what I thought a High Performance Dell XPS 17 should be.
I highly recommend this laptop if your looking for a great overall high performance laptop and the warranty it comes with can be renewed.

Customer Reviews

Length:: 1:09 Mins
First off, I had been keeping my eye out for a cheap alternative to the 360's wireless adapter for sometime now, and when I saw this unit as apart of Amazon's lightning deals for $30 I couldn't pass that up.
Before buying this unit, I was sure to peruse for reviews to see other peoples' luck with the item and was left a bit confused on how the product would perform. After playing around with the various settings and getting it to work, I want to just clear the confusion on how this will perform. Also, I have a Bachelors in Computer Networking, not that that means anything, but I have had a good bit of experience playing around with different routers/switches and while reading through the reviews I was left baffled by the varying contradicting opinions of the product. On a side-note, these types of At Home networking devices are aimed at ease-of-use and my experience had very little effect on how much more/less difficulty I had getting the product to work other than enabling me to filter out the weaker/inane reviews of the product.
Let me clear up the marketing confusion first. This item is a Wireless adapter. IT WILL ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT VARIOUS ITEMS WITH AN ETHERNET JACK TO YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK. That means if you have a desktop with an ethernet jack in the back that you would like to be able to hook up to your WIFI without stringing it to your router, this will work. For the "gamer's" that for some reason this item is targeting(most likely the xbox 360 owners), this item works flawlessly and comes strongly suggested given a few caveats(i.e a bit more cumbersome than Microsoft's options Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter A/B/G Networks Only,Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter A/B/G ; N Networks given that it has to be plugged into an electrical outlet).
I'll try to give you guys a step-by-step run through of how the configuration process worked for me.
First, I plugged it into an outlet and connected an ethernet cable from my PC to the unit(for the non-techies out there, this should work the same regardless of the Operating System you're on).
Second, I popped in the CD that came included and loaded the router setup software off of the CD. This step was a breeze given that there was no installation of anything onto your computer, as other reviewers had falsely alluded to.
Once in the router setup software, I did run into a few odd hiccups that slowed the overall process. The software was able to find the device right away and I was off and running setting up the unit, although almost every time I hit OK or Next through the prompts, I was returned with something like "Error, the changes were not made" though they were... Other than that, the setup was pretty quick and painless and should be no problem to those that dread anything techie like many of those in my family, given that they read the manual and follow the instructions. And once you have it setup to your wireless network, it'll pretty much connect any of your devices that has Ethernet port to your wireless without having to run through the setup process again. All the settings are saved so you can just move the unit anywhere. As long as you don't tweak anything in your router, this unit should be able to be unplugged and moved around as much as you like and still connect you every time.
My issues with the strange contradictory error messages were solved once I upgraded to the latest firmware
As for performance, this unit has worked flawlessly for my needs. I was playing Left 4 Dead 2 and a few other games through it and had no significant lag or difference between playing through this unit over playing it hooked up to my router with an ethernet cord. I also tried streaming a few movies from my PC, and again, it worked flawlessly while I fast forwarded/backward and skipped chapters. Though I have yet to try streaming anything HD from services like Netflix, I don't imagine anyone would have any problems given the much more than sufficient bandwidth that this router provides as long as you have a capable internet connection from your Internet Service Provider. I also unplugged my computer from the router and plugged it into this unit just for kicks and, unsurprisingly, it works just as it should.
The device itself is surprisingly small and sleek, though it is a bit of a finger-print magnet. Something of note too, is at the top of the router lies a Wifi Protected Setup button(WPS) that I'm guessing would make the process even easier by eliminating the need for the PC setup process if your router has support for it, mine did not so I can't comment on that.
Overall, I would strongly recommend this product to anyone looking for a cheap way to connect their devices up to their wireless network. Even if I hadn't gotten it on Amazon's sale, knowing what I know now about it, I would gladly by this unit again. That's my 2 cents anyways and I hoped it helped.

I purchased this for one reason, it was an "N" band adapter that could be used on the XBox 360 and was less expensive than the Microsoft "N" adapter. I was, oh, so looking that the Trendnet adapter would work well given it's price point. I wanted "N" band as I'm looking to use my XBox to stream music and videos in addition to playing games. If that's your goal skip this adapter and get the Microsoft N adapter, sure you'll spend a few more dollars but, as they say, you get what you pay for.
I have now been able to do side-by-side comparison on these two and can provide a summary of my experience. For full disclosure I'm using D-Link DIR-655 router with my set-up.
First, the good on this adapter:
- It will work on the XBox 360 (note comments below on performance, or lack thereof)
- It looks good with status lights to show connectivity
- It costs less than Microsoft's "N" band adapter
However, let's look at the not so good aspects of this adapter:
- Your connection rate will be MUCH less than if you used the Microsoft N adapter. With the Trendnet adapter my connection speed (as measured by the XBox network test) was just barely passable for TV. With the Microsoft's adapter I registered a full connection on the graph, now suitable for TV as well as HDTV! I also used my router's administrative status to get the actual hard reading, a 70-90 rate for Trendnet, 220-240 for Microsoft's adapter, that's a HUGE difference.
- You may need to make some changes to your router, I did. I had my router set for AES "Cipher Type", by default the Trendnet required "TKIP". I made change to my router, but later found I could login to the adapter's administrative set-up and change this - however this is not an option when you go into the configuration screen the first time so you have to change your router to support TKIP. Time spent debugging the problem with Trendnet adapter 15 minutes, no time required with Microsoft's adapter.
- You will need to set-up the Trendnet adapter using your PC, first installing the adapter set-up software, then configuring the adapter. I have 20 years of PC experience and given my set-up it was not as straight forward as I would have liked. I continued to run into problems where my IP address for the adapter wouldn't show up in on my router status screen (it showed as 0.0.0.0 - that's not right). I had to reset my router to get the IP address to show up. I found that I had to do this several other times over several days as it would revert to 0.0.0.0. I called Trendnet, they connected into my router remotely, they had no answers or suggestions. By comparison, I plugged in the Microsoft adapter to my XBox 360, selected my wireless network and entered my WPA password. Time spent setting up and debugging the Trendnet was 30 minutes, time with Trendnet Tech another 30 minutes. Using Microsoft's adapter was about 1 minute.
- The Trendnet is advertised as "N" band, however my router only recognized it as "802.11g"("G" band only). All other "N" band adapters on my system (3 others, now 4 including Microsoft's) all register as "802.11n (2.4GHz)". I asked Trendnet's tech support why this would not show as "N". I found their response to be quite interesting. Per the tech support, they tested the speed in their lab and achieved "N" band speeds, they therefore classified this as "N" band. This seems strange that they make their designation based on speed and this is not recognized as "N" band by my router, nor is speed anywhere near the "N" dual band that Microsoft's adapter provides. As noted above, Microsoft's adapter is properly recognized as "802.11n (2.4GHz)".
- You'll also need to have an additional A/C plug for the Trendnet adapter. With Microsoft's adapter it's powered by your XBox only.
My conclusion:
If you are looking for an adapter for gaming only (no streaming of music or videos), then this may be an adapter to look at.
If you are buying this to stream music and videos on network devices, based on my experience with sub-par network speeds (and not registering as an "N" band adapter), I'd look at other adapters.
If you are looking to use on XBox 360, go with Microsoft's product, you'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration, will easily justify the additional $$ to get Microsoft's "N" band adapter.
Note: The unit that I used for my review was the latest hardware and firmware offered by Trendnet (HW v2.0R with FW v1.01.22). As noted above, I, like other reviews, was able to connect my XBox 360 to the network wirelessly with this adapter. What I was lacking was performance. For basic gaming the low throughput that I found with this adapter won't matter. What I've failed to see in other review is their actual throughput speed. If you are streaming video you'll want a high throughput. Trendnet didn't provide that, my experience was the rate was about 1/3 the rate that Microsoft's "N" adapter provided. I had high hopes this would meet my networking needs, just unfortunately fell a bit short of target for me.

Customer Reviews

This Blueray does not have amazon and LG made me contact Netflix to inform Netflix that LG had a new item. At the same time they said Amazon would be on the blueray with a Update. That turned out to be untrue.
Returning BP-320 what a waiste of time.
Don't waiste your time with emails and phone calls use the chat opition
The Netflix menus kinda suck too.
LG said the BP-620 had amazon so I read those reviews and that came out untrue as well.

LG BD690 3D Wireless Network Blu-ray Disc Player with Smart TV and 250GB Hard Drive

    Customer Reviews

Received it and it worked fine for about 15 minutes. After downloading the update, the bd690 shut down and the HDMI port quit working. The component and composite outputs worked fine. After testing two HDMI cords and connecting the bd690 through my Denon 3808 receiver and directly into the TV it was obvious that the problem was the bd690. LG customer service was very quick to answer but the service was average at best. The person was helpful, but was definitely reading from a script. After telling her everything I had done she started asking me to test other HDMI cords, etc, which I had already done. They even had me download the incorrect update file the first time around. Will update when I get my replacement. Hopefully the firmware update doesn't blast the HDMI port every time...
    Update: (5/8/2011)
Called LG about replacement on 5/7 as I still have not received it. This time around they tell me I'm not getting a replacement but that they are in fact "repairing" my unit. Not what they told me on the phone 3 weeks ago, and so much for the 7-10 day window. LG customer service falling quickly in my eyes.
The conversation went something like this.
Wondering when my replacement will come?
We are repairing it so it will take a little time to go through service
I was told I would get a replacement in 7-10 days
I don't see that in the notes
So I'm not getting a new one?
Yes you will get that as soon as possible
But you just said I was getting it repaired
    Yes
So I'm getting a repaired one?
    Yes.
Divide by zero at this point and hung up!

OK...so I purchased the LG BD590 because I don't have a 3D television or plan to get one anytime soon. However, I purchased it at a great price from Amazon.com ($199). Returned it because it wasn't upgradeable without problems...look at the reviews for the LG BD590 and you'll see that there is a bug everytime anyone tries to upgrade the software when it prompts you to do so. Also, the Netflix on the BD590 is simple...a few genre's listed and categories and you pick from them or your stored que...you can't search for movies by title. With the BD690, it is different---you CAN search by typing in words like you would on a Wii or Xbox enabled Netflix. Also, I haven't done it yet but it says on the BD690 you can hook up a Iphone or Ipad and use the keyboard to enter data. Also, the customer service rep I spoke to at LG told me the app for MLB.COM wasn't working on the BD590---I tried it and subscribed on the BD690 and the picture is so incredible...this blueray player must upscale something because the baseball game looked incredible and lifelike. Now, welcome the LG BD690---another reviewer commented that there isn't any Amazon VOD on it...that is true...but, when you do the upgrade it prompts you to do, you have it and a few more things including a Google portway to get on the internet and use your TV as a full internet ready setup...WOW. This unit cost me $50 more than the BD590 but was well worth it...including the ability to do Hulu Plus and other stuff---games, puzzles and more...I LOVE this player...and even though it was $50 more, it also came with a FREE $5.99 credit for Vudu to watch a movie on them....great right there...Get this player and you WON'T be disappointed! LOVE IT.
    ---
UPDATE: Upgraded the software about a month ago...now, Netflix will not play...contacted LG and they say they are working on it...so, until a software update fixes this problem, I'm stuck NOT watching Netflix...it freezes up and no audio when trying to watch Netflix...everything else seems to work but there must be some compatibility issues with the software upgrade and Netflix.

LG BD670 3D Wireless Network Blu-ray Disc Player with Smart TV

    Customer Reviews

Chose this model because it had streaming, DLNA, and wireless built-in (you don't need a separate dongle). I have not been disappointed in any of its functions. Wireless connectivity was a breeze - setup was straightforward and this model accepts a 32-character WPA2 security key (unlike previous LG TVs and Blu-ray player models which were limited to 18-20 characters, as I discovered when I bought a wireless dongle for our TV!). The wireless connection seems to be much more stable than with the other wireless devices we have. I occasionally have to turn off and on again to get a connection on startup, but this is unsurprising given how flaky our router is ... :-)
Blu-ray playback is really good. Our first Blu-ray disc looked grainy and I was concerned until I read various forum discussions that criticized this movie transfer. Many Blu-ray movies are apparently intentionally grainy because this duplicates the "film" experience that the director intended. You can use the movie mode on your TV to reduce graininess as this lowers the sharpness setting. Our second Blu-ray disc was really smooth and detailed, as were most of the other discs. Playback resolution is excellent, you can see every pore on someone's face and the depth of field is amazing. There were no stutters, freezes or glitches with any of the discs we have played. DVD upscaling is also good - I decided it is not worth replacing any DVDs with Blu-ray discs as the upscaled playback in 1080p looks just as good as Blu-ray playback.
Wireless streaming from Netflix was absolutely painless, once I worked out that the "Netflix ESN" that the player provides in the network setup menu is NOT the code that you need to use for Netflix connection setup. You need to select the LG Premium menu icon which accesses premium streaming services, select Netflix and get the connection code from the setup menu there. Enter the code once on the Netflix website ("Activate a Netflix ready device" in your account settings) and Netflix streaming works automatically after that. Hopefully my experience will save other people hours of trying to connect with the wrong code! Netflix streaming is excellent quality, much better than broadcast TV for most shows. The player seems to stream seamlessly from Netflix with almost no stutters or degraded resolution issues, even for HD movies. The only issues I have seen are when my internet connection is congested (Comcast net access is pretty bad on Friday evenings and Saturdays in my area). I am impressed. [UPDATE: Netflix changed the registration procedure, so that you go into Netflix in the Premium menu option, then enter your login details. The player remembers this login, so you only have to enter this once. I am leaving the previous information up, as you may have to still register the device - not sure as mine is already registered!]
A recent firmware update (April 2011) added Amazon Video on Demand, which also works great! It is really cool to have these services. The device also offers Vudu, Pandora, etc. but I haven't used those. Firmware updates are easy, although these do take around 5-10 minutes to load via wireless connection - you need to keep your nerve and not turn off the player, thinking nothing is happening. Eventually, you get a message saying that the download has loaded and the player turns off and on again. If the download fails (which did happen once), the device is not affected (good design).
[UPDATE: there seem to be two sorts of update - firmware updates seem to upgrade the disc playing features; software updates seem to upgrade the Internet access software, for premium services such as Netflix, Hulu+, or Amazon VoD. Don't blame LG for clunky interfaces on these services, as they just use the software supplied by Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon. The YouTube interface is really annoying - difficult to locate specific videos and it plays the current, teeth-grindingly irritating video-of-the-day all the time you are trying to find what you want. But that is Google's fault, not LG's.]
I was really impressed by how painless it was to set up media streaming from a PC using DLNA. A copy of Nero Home Media Server essentials was supplied on CD - I installed this, the player automatically detected my PC and presented me with a list of files I could play from the media folder. This was so easy! DLNA file-streaming has worked brilliantly: I only experienced problems with one, huge (10 GB) home movie file that stuttered and stopped. Then I discovered the USB connection on the right-front panel of the player. I had been so taken with all of the streaming solutions that I overlooked the easiest way to play media files, which is from an external hard drive or flash drive! The BD670 played the huge file from an external hard drive with no problems. Since then, the player has played everything I have thrown at it: AVI and MKV, etc. using lots of different codecs. With 3 firmware updates in the month that I have owned it, I have a lot of confidence that it is being updated constantly to play all of the latest disc and file formats. So I am a very happy bunny indeed!
UPDATE: Hulu-Plus just appeared on the premium services (network access) menu, as of the July 30th software update! I can't vouch for the quality, because I am not a member. But the demo videos seem to play just fine. Napster was removed ("at the provider's request") in Dec. 2011.
UPDATE2: Had this for almost a year and I still LOVE it. This is the most fun I have ever had with video services. The quality of Blu-Ray disc and DVD playback is stunning. The streaming video services are alone worth the price of the player. I don't for a minute regret purchasing the BD-670.

Upsides: Pandora works nicely. Some other nice internet radio options.
    Netflix interface decent.
The best thing here is the SAMBA, CIFs or Windows file sharing (Whatever you call it) is nice. Works fine with Linux, works fine with MediaTomb upnp server. Couldn't find right transcoding options, but didn't need it... good with mp4's ripped h.264 and does mp3. plays flip video files natively no problem. Pause, rewind, fast forward over streaming (cifs or upnp).
LCD display shows timecode when playing streams from samba or upnp.
Bought device to have single device for netflix and home media serving.
    Plays mp3's nicely.
Better than ROKU for me since it does SAMBA and UPNP for home streaming, wasn't clear if Roku did that.
    Wi-FI, wired.
Oh, and it plays BD's too, I tested one, but not my primary reason for purchase.
Unit stays cool, is nice and small and does what I need.
Downsides: no screensaver in pandora, fearing burn-in.
    Menus kind of laggy.
No progress meter when updating firmware. LCD indicates updating but should have separate downloading and applying progress when installing firmware. Have seen samsung do this better with progress meter.
I'd like to add a special item here. LG you did this correctly --- you have a sticker for support on the device. Wow. I love you. I called, human answers. No hold time. Sat, Sun, no problem. I had an issue with firmware 268.E within 3 days there was a new 270-something to correct. 268.E added Amazon VOD for me and the other nifty items. Support was very friendly, apologized and was pleasant to work with. I've never owned home electronics where they actually had a support line with humans. And the humans called you back with updates on your problem!
First LG device I own... mad props for the useful human support!

    Customer Reviews

I've had this unit for about a month now. I agree with the other reviewers that state that they released this product too soon, without the proper software in place and tested. For instance, up until a few days ago, I constantly had problems with it loosing it's connection to the internet, even when it was connected via ethernet cord. However, since an automatic firmware update a couple of days ago, the player has worked flawlessly via the WiFi connection. (Please note: with the 650, you DO need the separate WiFi dongle, which plugs into the back of the machine). The last firmware update also added several new apps, such as Amazon VOD. It appears that new apps will be added in the coming months, including a web-browsing app, which I read about previously online (search for info. from the launch of LG's entire SmartTV product line to find this information).
The Netflix application is easy to use and fast. It also allows you to update your instant queue.
The Blu Ray function is fast-loading and I haven't had any problems. Good upscaling of DVD's as well.
Overall, I give the unit a 4/5 stars based on it's current performance and previous software glitches.

Unfortunately, I bought two of these.
    The good news:
    1) Of the two I bought, one is still working.
    2) One is on it's way to LG for repair under warranty (and within 90 days so they will not charge me $70 for labor).
    The bad news:
    1) I bought these to play movies from my media server and Netflix. While this feature DOES work, the sound doesn't synch with the video while playing mp4's. When played on any other player device, the mp4 file sound synchs perfectly.
    2) For some blue-ray disks, it takes about 3 minutes from the time I insert a factory blue-ray until it shows the menu.
    3) These are downloading updates weekly. The updates fail more often than they succeed.
    4) Tonight, while I was watching a movie from my server, I paused the movie, fed the dogs, and came back to a bricked BD650. Hard reset doesn't work. LG is nice enough to offer to fix it after 20 minutes on the phone.
Wow, what a dismal failure from LG.
The "customer service rep" told me that it was likely bricked because of the mp4 file I was playing. OMG.
I will be searching for a different player for my media library. These will be up for sale soon.
It's a shame I waited longer than 30 days to decide to get rid of them.
    ---edit
I am editing this to provide three more details:
To elaborate on the sound sync issue: when played with VLC, Windows Media Player, XBMC on Apple TV, iPad, the sound synchs perfectly. When played on the BD650, the sound out of sync on all mp4's.
I'm preparing to ship this back to LG. Unfortunately, there's a (not cheap) blue-ray disk in the player and I CAN'T GET THE DISK OUT. There's no "emergency eject" hole into which you can insert a paper clip. So I have to send this in with an expensive movie and cross my fingers that they will return it.
The warranty is effectively 90 days. After 90 days, there is a $79 "inspection" charge for warranty service and you pay shipping to LG AND return shipping. It's anyone's guess how much more the repair labor will cost after the $79 inspection charge and $30-40 shipping both ways. Since the unit cost about $100 brand new delivered, consider it disposable after 90 days. I'm undecided if this is praise for the purchase price or a complaint about the repair price.
